Tems and Wizkid have both received nominations for the highly anticipated NAACP Image Awards 2025 with their projects.

Nigerian music stars Tems and Wizkid have garnered attention once more by earning nominations for the prestigious NAACP Image Awards 2025. Tems, renowned for her soulful sound and mesmerizing performances, received a nomination in the Outstanding International Song category for her hit track "Love Me JeJe" from her debut album Born in the Wild.

This recognition affirms her growing prominence and acclaim on the global music scene. Wizkid, a leading figure in the Afrobeats movement, secured two nominations for his collaboration with Brent Faiyaz on "Piece of My Heart." The track is nominated for both Outstanding International Song and Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (Contemporary).

The 56th annual NAACP Image Awards will take place on February 22 at the Pasadena Civic Center in California, celebrating the achievements of people of color across music, film, television, and literature. Nigerian singer Chike recently took to social media to share a thought-provoking encounter with a former school bully.

The unexpected meeting highlighted the transformative power of time and personal growth.

According to Chike, the former school bully, who is older than him, surprisingly addressed him as "big bro" during their encounter. Chike reflected on the incident on X, saying, "Person weh de bully me lowkey for school just call me big bro. By the way, e senior me."

The post sparked a mixed reaction from fans, with some accusing Chike of being "classist" in his remarks. However, Chike clarified his stance, stating that his intention was not to perpetuate classism.

Chike's experience with bullying is not an isolated incident. Several Nigerian artists, including Tiwa Savage, Tems, and Kizz Daniel, have spoken out about their own struggles with bullying during their formative years.

While some fans praised Chike for overcoming his past and achieving success, others debated the complexities of such encounters and their reflection of societal changes.

Other Nigerian artists who made the list include Ololade Asake with Active (feat. Travis Scott) at number 11, Sarz with Happiness (feat. The list, curated by Mankaprr Conteh, Nelson C.J., Achille Tenkiang, Kui Mwai, and Madzadza Miya, showcases the best in Afropop right now, with a focus on impact, regional representation, and unique musical styles.

This achievement is proof of the growing influence and popularity of Afrobeats and Nigerian music globally, with 13 Nigerian artists making the list.

There’s a common misconception around sampling in Afrobeats that needs clarification.

Over the years, artists have often drawn inspiration from other musicians' works—whether old or new—to create fresh tracks, and Afrobeats as a genre wholeheartedly embraces this culture.

Interestingly, musical inspiration can come from a range of sources beyond just other songs. Movie scenes, motivational quotes, and even snippets of conversation can all spark new musical ideas, and vice-versa. Sampling has become the most popular term associated with this practice, though it’s often mistaken for interpolation due to their similarities.

To clarify: a sample involves directly using a snippet of an original recording in a new track. Meanwhile, an interpolation is a recreation of a song’s melody or composition, played note-for-note, without using the original audio.

For example, if you performed the melody from 2Baba’s “African Queen” in your own song, that would be an interpolation. But if you included an unedited loop from the original recording, that would be a sample.

For context, the Rema song below is a sample, where he brilliantly incorporated the 1985 jazz hit ‘Is It a Crime’ by Nigerian-British soul singer Sade Adu.

Against this backdrop, here are popular Afrobeats songs you thought were samples but are actually interpolations

  • 'Sorrow, Blood & Tears' - Fela Anikulapo Kuti, interpolated by Burna Boy on 'Ye'
  • 'Love me Jeje' - Seyi Sodimu, interpolated by Tems on 'Love me Jeje'
  • 'Lady' - Fela Anikulapo Kuti, interpolated by Wizkid on 'Jaiye Jaiye'
  • 'Kpolongo' - Danfo Drivers, interpolated by Tekno on 'Jogodo'
  • 'Sawale' - Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson, interpolated by Flavour on 'Nwa Baby'
  • 'Agogo ko ma ro' - K1 De Ultimate, interpolated by Davido on 'Like Dat'
  • 'Esubiribiri ebomi' - King Sunny Ade, interpolated by Mohbad on 'Sorry'
  • 'Opon Apala ti sun' - Musiliu Haruna Ishola, interpolated by Adekunle Gold on 'Rodo'

Ayra Starr and Tyla have taken to social media to react to the 3 nominations received by Tems ahead of the Grammy Awards 2025.

Following the confirmation of the list of nominees for the 2025 Grammy Awards, singers, Ayra Starr and Tyla have taken to social media to react to the three nominations received by Tems ahead of the 67th edition of the prestigious award ceremony.

Ayra Starr and Tyla had been categorised as 2 of the biggest snubs by the Recording Academy following the lack of nominations for the two stars but this didn't damper or deter their mood as they both took to social media to celebrate Tems who defied all odds and logic by receiving 3 nominations on the night making her the most nominated African act at the Grammy Awards 2025.

Tems received a nomination in a key category that has once been considered unattainable for African artists: the Best R&B Song category, followed by the Best Global Album and Best African Music Performance categories, respectively.

Tyla shared a message of congratulations for Tems on her page, and Ayra Starr also retweeted Tems's post, expressing her excitement at the nomination.

The songstress manager gave the detailed story behind the grammy-winning single 'Wait for U'

Nigerian music executive Muyiwa Awoniyi, better known as Donawon, who manages Grammy-winning singer Tems, recently shared the inside story of how her collaboration with American superstars Drake and Future came to be.

The acclaimed Tems has been on a global rise since her breakout with Essence, achieving major milestones such as working with Rihanna, Beyoncé, and other top international artistes. During this incredible run, she secured a spot on Wait for U, a track with Drake and Future that earned her two Grammy nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, ultimately leading to her first Grammy win.

In a recent interview, Donawon recounted how the collaboration unfolded. According to him, while Tems and her team were on set with global company Coca-Cola, he received a message from a colleague urging him to check his email for something important. When he opened the email, he discovered a message from Epic Records—Future’s label—requesting clearance for Wait for U, which samples Tems' track Higher as the song's hook.
