Here are five outstanding facts football fans must know about the Super Eagles of Nigeria's new head coach Eric Chelle.

Following the announcement of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, questions as to who he is have emerged on social media and in sports forums. With this in mind, we have compiled a list of five must-know facts about Eric Chelle the new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

As hard as it may sound or seem to believe the appointment of Chelle by the NFF can be categorised as historic in all ramifications.

Who is Eric Chelle Nigeria's new coach?

Historic Milestone

Eric Chelle has made history by becoming the first non-Nigerian African to take charge of the Super Eagles. He brings a wealth of experience from his playing and coaching careers.

AFCON Success
Chelle’s most notable achievement as a coach came when he led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His team’s strong performance ended in a narrow extra-time defeat against Ivory Coast, showcasing his tactical acumen on the continental stage.

Coaching Experience
Before managing Mali’s national team, Chelle honed his skills in the French football system. He built his reputation by managing several lower-tier clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, and Boulogne. His leadership in these roles demonstrated his ability to develop teams and compete effectively under challenging conditions.

Playing Career
As a former professional footballer, Chelle represented Mali five times internationally. He also had an impressive club career in France, featuring for Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais, gaining invaluable experience in top-flight European football.

Immediate Challenges Ahead
Chelle’s first major test as the Super Eagles’ head coach will be navigating Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Key matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe are set for March, and his leadership will be critical in securing early momentum for the campaign.

It remains to be seen if the appointment of Chelle by the NFF would serve its purpose for the Super Eagles as the World Cup 2026 qualifiers draw closer and AFCON 2025 scheduled for December as well.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria ended their qualifying series ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations with a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The Super Eagles had initially booked the top spot in the group ahead of the competition that will be hosted in Morocco next year (2025). Nigeria came into the game against Rwanda with some of the first-team players returning to their clubs since the fixture was inconsequential.

The first half ended goalless as both sides failed to create chances as they lacked urgency when they got to the final third of the opponents.

The second half started with intensity from both sides, the Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen made two quick substitutions. Samuel Chukwueze replaced Iheanacho while Frank Onyeka came on for Yusuf after he suffered a heavy tackle in the first half.

Chukwueze broke the deadlock with a solo effort in the 59th minute. Picking up the ball from Onyeka in midfield, he skillfully evaded three defenders before slotting it into the bottom right corner of the net.

Rwanda came back into the game with two quick goals in three minutes which was enough for them to claim all three points.

The body governing football in Africa, CAF, has taken a final decision as it concerns the second leg of the Libya vs Nigeria game in the Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF released a statement on its official website on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, which is the same day the Libya vs Nigeria match was initially scheduled for. According to reports from the communique released, the match has been postponed until further notice while they continue their investigation.

What did CAF say about Libya vs Nigeria game?

"The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Qualifier fixture between Libya and Nigeria will not take place as scheduled tonight. The matter will be referred to the competent CAF bodies."

Recall that the Super Eagles of Nigeria decided to forfeit the match against the North Africans after they were delayed at the airport upon arrival from Nigeria. According to reports from the players, they were not in the right frame of mind and were not physically ready to play.

The captain of the team, William Troost-Ekong had initially released a statement on his official social media account stating that football is all about respect for one's opponent but that must start with themselves.

He said,

12+ hours in an abandoned airport in Lybia after our plane was diverted whilst descending. Lybian government rescinded our approved landing in Benghazi with no reason. They’ve locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food or drink. All to play mind games. I’ve experienced stuff before playing away in Africa but this is disgraceful behaviour. Even the Tunisian Pilot who thankfully managed to navigate the last minute change to an airport not fit for our plane to land had never seen something like this before."

He added,

"Upon arrival he tried to find a nearby airport to rest with his crew to be denied at every hotel again under Government instruction. He could sleep there but NO NIGERIAN crew members allowed. They have returned to now sleep on the plane which is parked up. At this point we have called for our Nigerian Government to intervene and rescue us. As the captain together with the team we have decided that we will NOT play this game. CAF should look at the report and what is happening here. Even if they decide to allow."

this kind of behaviour, let them have the points. We will not accept to travel anywhere by road here even with security it’s not safe. We can only imagine what the hotel or food would be like given to us IF we continued. We respect ourselves and respect our opponents when they are our guests in Nigeria. Mistakes happen but these things on purpose have nothing to do with int. football. We respect ourselves and respect our opponents when they are our guests in Nigeria. Mistakes happen but these things on purpose have nothing to do with int. football."

However, both teams will wait for CAF's final verdict to decide if the points will be warded to Libya or Nigeria or if the game will be rescheduled.

Nigerians have expressed their displeasure with the way the men's senior national team, the Super Eagles have been treated by the Libya authorities at the airport.

The Super Eagles arrived in Libya ahead of the second leg of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game which is scheduled to be played on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. According to reports, the decision to treat them this way was because they were unhappy with how Nigeria treated them when they arrived for the first leg which was played on Friday, October 11, 2024, in Uyo.

However, the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) has debunked the situation starting that what happened to the Libyan players was a case of misunderstanding.

However, the NFF has decided to fly the Super Eagles back to Nigeria as the players have opted not to play the game as they are not in the right state of mind after being delayed for over 12 hours at the Al Abraq Airport.

What did the NFF say about the Libya vs Super Eagles of Nigeria game?

The delegation of Nigeria to Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya still remained at the Al Abraq Airport 12 hours after landing in Libya. The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport away from Benghazi just as the pilot was completing his approach to the Benghazi Airport. We understand the Al Abraq International Airport is only used for hajj operations. Fatigued players and officials have remained nonplussed as the host Libyan Football Federation failed to send any reception team or even vehicles to take the delegation members from the airport to their hotel, said to be 3 hours away in Benghazi.
The NFF made arrangements for separate vehicles for the team, but the plan was unhinged by the diversion of the aircraft. Players have resolved not to play the match any longer as NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home.

Here are a few reactions from Nigerians;

Former coach, Sunday Oliseh in his latest interview has opened up on the players the NFF has told him not to invite to camp during his time with the Super Eagles.

Former head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Sunday Oliseh in an exclusive interview with renowned Nigerian journalist Matthew Edafe Elegbete on Elegbete TV, has opened up on his struggles during his time with the national team revealing players the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had instructed him not to invite to the camp during his tenure.

Sunday Oliseh revealed that the NFF had advised him not to invite top players, Mikel Obi, Vincent Enyema and Emmanuel Emenike to the camp because they had been having issues with them in the team.

He revealed that he had argued in favour of these players and had opted to meet with them and share his philosophy with them as well. He went on to add that only 2 of the players (Enyeama and Emenike) had responded to the call and his decision to meet with him but Mikel Obi had opted out of having such a meeting.

He argued that these are the challenges home-based coaches hired to manage the national team would face if they lack the personality to do the job.

He also added that he possessed the personality which many often categorized as stubbornness which was why he was successful as the head coach of the national side during his time.

Days after the initial confirmation of Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, AFCON 2025 and the World Cup 2026 if the team qualifies, has been unveiled in a press conference session held today, Monday, May 13, 2024. He was unveiled by the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh alongside the NFF.

After the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, the former Real Betis winger was given a permanent appointment. He served as an assistant to Peseiro during the last African Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast, where the team managed to secure the second position.

The event which was held in Abuja at the media centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in the Federal Capital Territory was attended by the leaders of the NFF and media personalities as well. The minister stated, “Any country I find an indigenous coach sitting on the bench, I always feel very proud and I am glad that we have an opportunity that have a Nigerian coach, Finidi George, as football men national team coach.”

Who is the assistant coach of Nigeria?

The Assistant coaches of Nigeria were also confirmed at the unveiling as it was revealed that Daniel Amokachi would be returning to the Super Eagles as the assistant coach 1.

Chima Onyeke, Benjamin James, and Olatunji Baruwa (Goalkeeper trainer) were also confirmed to be part of Finidi George's backroom staff.

What we think of the new appointment

It remains to be seen if Finidi George and his team can live up to the expectations of over 100 million Nigerians in his new role at the National side, for a coach who had worked with the team prior to his interim position for friendlies, we have not been fully impressed with what he has offered so far.

From all indications, the players feel comfortable with him in charge and we believe this trust and respect might also be rewarded with a good performance from the team.

There is all to play for at the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and it might just be the right time to see what the former Eyinmba of Aba coach has to offer on the big stage.

Emmanuel Amuneke, the former Super Eagles star, has disclosed the reasons he believes cost him the position of the Super Eagles head coach

Emmanuel Amuneke was considered a frontrunner to replace Jose Peseiro as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Peseiro's contract with the NFF expired in February after leading Nigeria to a second-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) in Ivory Coast.

However, the NFF announced on Monday that another Super Eagles legend, Finidi George, would take over as the new head coach. Before the announcement, George had been serving as an interim coach and had led the Super Eagles during March's international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

In a recent interview with Nigerian publication Punch, Amuneke opened up about his experience with the selection process and shared his thoughts on what he believed were attempts to tarnish his reputation in the media. Despite his disappointment at not being selected, Amuneke remained diplomatic and professional in his approach, as he has always been known for his sportsmanship and integrity.

He said, “They succeeded in smearing my name in the media because of the Eagles job. They can continue with their propaganda, but I will remain disciplined. It’s not do-or-die job. All those allegations made in the media online because of the Eagles job are obviously not true, but those who recommended candidates for the job know I will not be easily bullied. I know there is still bad blood with these officials, but it’s fine.”

With the position of the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria still vacant, reports indicate that the NFF have started considering the option of hiring a World Cup finalist for the position.

According to numerous reports, the NFF will be vying with countries like South Korea, Morocco, Cameroon and others to sign the World Cup finalist for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

It has been revealed that the head coach who led France to the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup 2023 and Saudi Arabia to their first victory over Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Hervé Renard.

French football manager Hervé Renard, who led Saudi Arabia in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, is expected to step down from his role as coach of the French women's national team at the conclusion of the Tokyo Olympics. Renard himself announced his decision during a press conference earlier this week, where he confirmed that he had already informed the French Football Federation (FFF) of his intention to move on after the summer tournament.

While acknowledging the difficulty of the job, Renard outlined his personal objectives for the future, stating that he hopes to lead a men's national team to the 2026 World Cup. This would be his third World Cup as a head coach of a men's team, and he emphasized that this is a primary motivation for him. Renard is actively seeking opportunities to take charge of another men's national team shortly.

This would be a huge boost for the Super Eagles of Nigeria as Renard is known for his prowess in tournaments and also with African countries as well. With AFCON 2025 and the world cup 2026 qualifiers on the horizon this would be a statement signing for the NFF as well as a way of them declaring their intent for men's football on the biggest of stages.

Interim boss Finidi George led the team to victory against Ghana on Friday, March 22, 2024, with goals from Rangers’ Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman, despite a last-minute penalty from Jordan Ayew.

George will be hoping for another impressive performance and result against Mali today to further strengthen his chances of holding a permanent role as the head coach of the team ahead of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

What time is the Nigeria vs Mali Match?

Nigeria vs Mali will be played today, Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 10 pm West Africa Time in Morocco. The Super Eagles are facing another friendly match tonight in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh. This match follows their narrow win over fierce rivals Ghana on Friday at the same venue.
