Most Chelsea fans were not impressed with the decision of Enzo Maresca to substitute Romeo Lavia who was their best player after the first half.

The Italian was speaking after one of the most entertaining games of the season so far at White Hart Lane on Sunday, December 8, 2024. According to him, the midfielder had a hamstring and the wise decision was to take him out against risking him for the entity of the game.

"Roméo Lavia had a hamstring problem…but now he is okay. We don't want to take risks in December. Sometimes it's better to make changes after 45 minutes rather than lose a player for five or six games."

Chelsea are currently in second place behind league leaders Liverpool with a difference of five points between both clubs. However, Enzo Maresca like every other person associated has ruled out the club's chance of competing in the Premier League title race.

"Arsenal, City and Liverpool probably don't slide like Marc Cucurella did. To be serious, we are not ready, we are far from these teams. We focus on day-by-day and trying to improve the team."

The news was confirmed exclusively on the Athletic's website on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Josh Acheampong was reportedly regarded as the third-choice right-back to captain Reece James and Malo Gusto, but this has not gone well with the defender.

Josh Acheampong was not even named on the bench for Chelsea’s games at Bournemouth and West Ham last month despite James and Gusto being unavailable for selection through injury. He made his professional debut under former boss Mauricio Pochettino against Tottenham in February and was taken on the club’s pre-season tour of the USA ahead of the more experienced Trevoh Chalobah in the summer.

The 18-year-old made his debut last season under Mauricio Pochettino last season but has made just one appearance under Enzo Maresca so far, playing 27 minutes as a substitute against Barrow in the Carabao Cup on September 24, 2024

He has not played for the Under-21s either despite starting four of their first five games this season. His last match for them was on September 15, and his name was not on the teamsheet for their Premier League Cup match away at Bournemouth.

The England international has been on the radar of some of the top clubs in Europe, but the Blues are not willing to sell the defender who could double up as a right back and centre defender.

The Italian has seen his Chelsea side lose just one game in the Premier League so far which was against the Champions ( Manchester City). Enzo Maresca was asked about the chances of the Blues beating City and Arsenal to the title at the end of this season in May 2025.

He said,

Competing to win the Premier League? I really don’t think we can compete with Man City or Arsenal now. We are not ready. Man City worked with Pep for nine years. Arsenal, five years. Us, three months.The target is to slowly, slowly, get closer. When you win games, it provides energy, trust, confidence. It’s helping the process but the players are the first to recognise when the team plays well or not. They're especially convinced because they can see the identity and the purpose."

The last time Chelsea won the league was in 2016 when an Italian manager( Antonio Conte) was in charge of the club. However, most Chelsea fans will hope Chelsea can't win the Premier League title- Enzo Maresca they can win the title at the end of this season.
