The post 3 Reasons why Burna Boy and Odumodublvck did not win the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards appeared first on NotjustOk.
]]>Burna Boy was up for Best Live Performer, while Odumodublvck vied for Best International Flow at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards. Here are three possible reasons why they failed to secure the coveted awards:

We go again next year pic.twitter.com/BoobCFX9hy
Burna Boy faced stiff competition from American hip-hop icon Missy Elliott, who ultimately took home the Best Live Performer award. Basically, Elliott's legendary status and consistent delivery of high-energy performances made her a strong contender. Similarly, Odumodublvck was edged by British rapper Ghetts, who has built a reputation for his unique flow and lyrical prowess.

Additionally, Kendrick Lamar's sweeping victory, with 7 awards, including Best Song, Best Artist, and Best Music Video, overshadowed other nominees. Also, five of his wins were courtesy of his critically acclaimed diss record Not Like Us. So, Lamar's dominance may have shifted focus away from other talented artists, including Burna Boy and Odumodublvck.
Meanwhile, the BET Hip Hop Awards voting process often favours artists with broader recognition and appeal within the American hip-hop community. Although Burna Boy and Odumodublvck have gained international recognition, their influence may not be as widespread within the specific voting demographic. Also, this factor, combined with the strong presence of established American and British artists, may have contributed to their loss.
Despite this setback, Burna Boy and Odumodublvck's nominations demonstrate their growing impact on the global music scene. Lastly, their continued success will likely pave the way for future wins and increased recognition within the industry.

]]>The post 5 Nigerian artists who have sold out 02 Arena appeared first on NotjustOk.
]]>The iconic 20,000-seater venue has been the scene of some of Nigeria's greatest music and most innovative musicians who helped define its sound across Africa.
This article celebrates the remarkable achievements of Nigerian artists who have achieved this impressive feat. This is because they have cemented their status as international music powerhouses and redefining the global music landscape.
Firstly, Wizkid, born Ayodeji Balogun paved the way for Nigerian artists at the 02 Arena. The sold-out 2018 gig featured Afrobeats stars like Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, Tiwa Savage and Tekno launching Wizkid's career globally. In 2019, Wizkid sold-out 02 Arena for the second time with his star-studded "Starboy Fest". This show included guests like Skepta, Tiwa Savage, Olamide and Fireboy DML. Lastly, Wizkid, in 2021 made history becoming the first artist ever to sell out the O2 Arena three times. This was with his massive Made in Lagos concert series. Tickets for the event reportedly sold out in just 12 minutes. This made Wizkid one of only 7 acts to do so alongside global legends like Beyoncé and Spice Girls in an astonishingly quick time frame.
Secondly, Davido, popular for his exhilarating performances is a three-time sold-out artiste at the 02 Arena. A powerhouse in the global music scene, Davido first sold out the O2 Arena in 2019. By this, he became the second Nigerian artist to achieve this feat after Wizkid. Davido performed alongside other African artists like Mayorkun, Skiibii, Patoranking & Ckay in his 2022 and 2024 concerts along with a few international stars.
Thirdly, in 2022, YBNL signee Asake dropped his new album Mr. Money With The Vibe. This unique mix of Afrobeats, hip hop and more, attracted a worldwide audience, leading to sold-out shows around the world. Asake sold off the O2 Arena which was inhabited in full on August 20, 2023. This record was made within two years of launching his music career. Also, he played the songs on his debut album, mixed in with hits by request, such as Lonely at the Top. Olamide, Tiwa Savage and Fireboy DML also graced the stage with Asake on that night to give fans an experience of a lifetime.
Consequently, Asake returned to the O2 Arena on September 22, 2024, for his second sold-out show. During this concert, Asake thrilled fans with performances of tracks from his third album Lungu Boy. The event drew the attention of stars like Grammy winner Wizkid and actor Idris Elba, who presented Asake with both a sold-out plaque and a BRIT silver plaque for his album Work Of Art.
Additionally, in 2021 Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu performed at the O2 Arena and became yet another Nigerian artist to sell out the 02 Arena. This was with his Spaceship concert. Burna Boy captivated his audience throughout the show with his several jaw-dropping costume and electrifying performance. It was one of the hits of the night, but his standout performance was Ye which caused a euphoric response from the crowd. Notably, Burna Boy's O2 performance was a career-defining moment and it has put him firmly among Africa's biggest musical exports.
Furthermore, Rema, the 23-year-old Afrobeat sensation, became the youngest African artist to sell out the 02 Arena with his Ravage Uprising show in November 2023. The concert featured performances from fellow Mavin Records colleagues, Ayra Starr, Crayon, and Magixx. Rema's achievement shows the growing global appeal of Afrobeats among younger audiences.
Lastly, as Afrobeats continues to transcend borders, it is clear that Nigerian artists will remain a dominant force in the global music landscape. Their success has paved the way for future generations of artists, cementing Nigeria's position as a hub for musical talent.

]]>The post 5 Valuable lessons to learn from the P-Square feud appeared first on NotjustOk.
]]>Peter and Paul Okoye’s feud has led to a halt in their music collaboration as both of them now perform as solo artists. However, the P-Square feud offers valuable lessons to every individual.
Hence we've compiled a list of 5 valuable lessons every individual can learn from the ongoing P-Square feud.
Firstly, communication is an important factor in any relationship at all. This is evident in the ongoing P-Square feud. The feud clearly shows how important effective communication strengthen a relationship. Lack of communication, especially when misunderstandings and unaddressed issues occur, can lead to major conflicts. It is advisable for every individual to practice open, honest, and respectful communication. This will help prevent matters from escalating and offer solutions early enough. For instance, If Peter had expressed feeling disrespected by Paul’s actions before now, they might have addressed the issue privately, and the feud might have been avoided.
Secondly, it is necessary to separate personal and professional relationships to avoid conflicts. The saying “do not mix friendship with business” is correct. It is advisable to set clear boundaries and keep family matters apart from business matters. This will foster a healthy work and family relationship. Unfortunately, the Okoye brothers failed to understand this. For instance, it is obvious the P-Square group is operated as a family business with Jude Okoye their brother as their manager. One would think that at some point, he might feel entitled and feel he deserved more than he was getting from their earnings. Also, Jude’s wife was mentioned in Peter’s second letter. By this, she was dragged into the feud and this shows how mixing business and professional relationships can lead to conflict.
Meanwhile, as 2Baba’s manager, Efe Omorogbe stated that, "You get what you negotiate, not necessarily what you 'deserve'." This explains the true nature of professional relationships. It depicts that agreements and contracts are based on mutual understanding and negotiation, not emotions or entitlement. He further explained that the 40/60 slit ratio in the P-Square case is in favour of the performing artist. Though, it was negotiated with Jude their manager and the founder of Square Records and Northside Entertainment. However, it has been perceived as unfair by some due to Jude’s multi-layered roles and contributions.
Additionally, it is safe to say Peter and Paul had different opinions and creative visions which contributed to their feud. They did not recognize or respect their individuality and autonomy within the group. This would have promoted harmony in their professional relationship. Respecting and acknowledging people’s individuality and autonomy will strengthen their bond and enhance growth.
Furthermore, the P-Square ongoing feud and temporary split shows that even the closest relationships can face challenges. Just like best friends fight, lovers fight, siblings fight. However, understanding each other’s point of view, forgiveness and willingness to reconcile are essential for healing and a stronger relationship. The Okoye brothers need to demonstrate genuine efforts towards forgiveness, reconciliation and healing. They keep coming on social media to call each other out, continuing the disagreement with no one actually trying to understand the other person’s pain or point of view.
Consequently, seeking mediation and support especially when the conflict becomes one of public interest is crucial. Third-party intervention can help resolve the dispute and provide new perspectives. As of now, we do not know if the Okoye brothers have sought mediation or support in the ongoing feud. Although, former presidential candidate, Peter Obi visited them last week. However, the reason for his visit was not made public. Meanwhile, some celebrities and fans have weighed in on the P-Square feud urging the brothers to please resolve the issue and move on with making music but it is clear that they have not listened as the feud is still ongoing. If they had accepted help, their issues might have been resolved amicably.
Conclusively, the P-Square feud has given a reminder that relationships require effort. Also, understanding, effective communication and forgiveness strengthen any relationship. Individuals need to learn from the P-Square feud and apply these lessons in their own relationships with love and respect.

]]>Similarly, Spotify’s spotlight on emerging Southern African talents like Sykes, Ggoldie, and Thakzin further solidifies how the region's music has evolved vibrantly and spread into the world.
This rise in prominence is not confined to music alone. African artists are increasingly making their mark in the video game industry, which is traditionally dominated by other forms of entertainment. Just as the Thimbles game subtly integrates various cultural elements, integrating African music into video games reflects the broader trend of merging cultural aspects to enhance the gaming experience.
From contributing to game soundtracks to headlining major gaming events, these artists are expanding their influence beyond traditional music platforms.
Wizkid, one of the most renowned Nigerian musicians in recent years, has continually broken barriers and set new records throughout his career. Among his many achievements, he recently made history as the first African artist to headline Gamers 8 in 2022.

In addition to his Gamers 8 performance, Wizkid’s career is decorated with numerous accolades. He has multiple Billboard nominations, and he was the first African artist to receive seven nominations at the Billboard Music Awards in 2017. Zakes Bantwini is a South African musician who is famous for his influential Afro House and Gqom contributions. He has appeared on Apple Music’s ‘Isigubhu’ cover and headlined events such as Miss South Africa in 2021.

The success of “Osama” has also been further amplified by remixes, including Talbot’s “Midnight Miracle Remix,” showcasing Bantwini’s ability to blend traditional and contemporary elements.

Kasango, born Kasmario Thulani Ike Fankis, is a South African musician who is celebrated for his contributions to House and Gqom music. With a keen ear for beats and a passion for music production, Kasango has made a notable impact on the industry.
Kasango is known for notable works like "Save a Prayer (DJ CHUS Rework)" and has a following of 477 on Resident Advisor, a platform that spotlights DJs and producers from around the world.
His work blends traditional and modern elements, enriching South Africa’s music scene with his distinctive sound. Like his collaborator Bantwini, Kasango is also featured on the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack.
Major League DJz, the South African duo comprising twin brothers Bandile and Banele Mbere, is renowned for their energetic dance tracks. They fuse kwaito, amapiano, and Afrobeats with American hip-hop influences.
The duo, who grew up in Boston before returning to South Africa, initially made their mark as party organizers before transitioning to successful DJs. They emerged as key figures in the new-age Kwaito movement, with notable releases like “Mine For The Night,” “Margaret,” and “La Maluka.”
Just like Bantwini and Kasango, Major League DJz’s is featured on the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack. Their inclusion in this high-profile game underscores their international appeal and contributes to the game’s diverse auditory experience.
Brenda Fassie was a seminal South African singer, songwriter, and actress known for her powerful voice and dynamic performances. She began her music career in the 1980s, gaining early recognition with local bands before signing with Gallo Records. Fassie achieved breakthrough success in 1988 with her debut album “Young, Gifted and Black,” which established her as one of South Africa’s leading black female artists.

Brenda Fassie’s legacy lives on through her inclusion in the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack. Her powerful voice and unforgettable tracks bring a touch of South African cultural heritage to the game, celebrating her enduring impact on music and enriching the gaming experience with her iconic sound.

]]>The post Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo: Is Brain Jotter guilty of copyright infringement? appeared first on NotjustOk.
]]>The video amassed 29.1 million views and over 30,000 comments on Instagram. Additionally, it has 19.6 million views and 23,000 comments on TikTok. The renewed interest in the song sparked a wave of social media posts. Also, it sparked a debate on whether Brain Jotter’s use of the song constituted copyright infringement.
This opinion piece delves into the complexities of the situation. It attempts to answer the pressing question: Is Brain Jotter guilty of copyright infringement?
Firstly, the core of the copyright infringement argument lies in Brain Jotter’s initial use of Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche in his skit. This was done without obtaining permission from Gentleman Mike Ejeagha. Also, this action appears to contravene Section 36 of the Copyright Act 2022. This act prohibits the unauthorized use of copyrighted works.
According to the Act, "Doing or causing anybody to do any act, which constitutes a violation of the exclusive right conferred on a copyrightable work," is prohibited. This section is designed to protect the rights of creators. Also, it ensures that they have control over the use of their work.
Furthermore, Sections 2 and 12 of the Copyright Act 2022 protect sound recordings. It grants the owners exclusive rights over their works. So, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, as the owner of the song, has the exclusive right to control its use. Unauthorized use of the song can thus be seen as a breach of these exclusive rights. As intellectual property lawyer Olanrewaju Bello explains, "All copyrighted sound recordings, or in this case, songs, and the owners of such work are entitled to exclusive rights over them, and nobody can use such work without the permission of the owner."
Additionally, Section 20 of the Copyright Act provides exceptions for fair use. This includes private use, satire, non-commercial research, caricature, parody, review, or reporting of current events. Also, Bello suggests that it is not straightforward to categorize Brain Jotter’s usage as falling outside these exceptions. He notes, "There’s a bit of actionable basis there. However, it’s the court that can determine whether Brain Jotter’s usage falls within the scope of the exceptions of fair usage provided for in Section 20."
Meanwhile, in his subsequent videos, Brain Jotter used the licensed version of the song from the Instagram music library. According to Bello, this does not constitute a breach of copyright as Premier Records Ltd has granted a blanket license to TikTok, allowing the use of the song within the platform’s guidelines. Bello states, "In this case, the legal process of using sound recordings in skits and online content is to first ascertain whether such recording is already licensed to the social media platform and free for use of the content creator or requires further licensing. In this case, Premier Records Ltd has licensed the song in question to TikTok through its DSP in what is regarded as a blanket license. The implication is that Brain Jotter is not liable for copyright infringement on the song because this sound recording is licensed and is used within the spirit of the provisions of the Copyright Act 2022."
Although, Ejeagha’s representatives could have taken legal action by initiating a takedown of the video and suing for damages. However, given the goodwill generated and the lack of intent to press charges, this appears unlikely. Bello elaborates, "The owners are not pressing charges, but if they wanted, they could initiate a takedown and even sue for damages."
Notwithstanding, the virality of Brain Jotter’s video has brought renewed attention and potential income from increased streaming traffic for Gentleman Mike Ejeagha. Also, Brain Jotter’s goodwill gesture of offering ₦2 million and his visit to Ejeagha’s home also indicate a positive outcome for the 90-year-old musician. Meanwhile, the goodwill the 90-year-old musician has enjoyed since the video went viral and the potential income he stands to enjoy from increased streaming traffic also suggest that a case of copyright infringement might be a lost cause.
While Brain Jotter’s initial use of the song may technically constitute copyright infringement, the situation is nuanced. So, the potential benefits to Gentleman Mike Ejeagha and the subsequent compliance by Brain Jotter with licensing requirements suggest a complex interplay of legal and ethical considerations. Also, the recurring issue of copyright infringement in Nigeria’s creative sector shows the need for clearer guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to protect the rights of artists while fostering creative expression.
However, is Brain Jotter guilty of copyright infringement? Legally, there is a case to be made. Ethically, the situation is more complicated, with potential benefits for both parties. Ultimately, this case reflects the importance of understanding and respecting copyright laws while recognizing the evolving dynamics of the digital age.

]]>With over 29.1 million views on Instagram and 19.6 million views on TikTok, this viral sensation has introduced Gentleman Mike Ejeagha's music to a new generation. But his legacy stretches far beyond this one song, with a career spanning over six decades and 33 albums filled with classic records that have become an integral part of Igbo folk music.
In this article, we'll delve into six timeless classics by Gentleman Mike Ejeagha that showcase his mastery of Igbo folklore, idioms, and proverbs.
Firstly, the 1983 record Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche has recently gained immense popularity after being featured in a viral video by comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter. Posted on Instagram on July 5, 2024, the video has garnered 29.1 million views. Also, it has over 30,000 comments, with an additional 19.6 million views and over 23,000 comments on TikTok. The folklore song narrates the cleverness of the tortoise (Mbe) and the might of the elephant (Enyi). It introduces many new listeners to Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s work.
Secondly, Ome Ka Agu Omenani, recorded after the Nigerian Civil War, is a song that celebrates the resilience and kinship of the Igbo people. This song enjoyed massive success and resonated deeply with listeners. Additionally, it highlights the spirit of perseverance and unity among the Igbo community. The song's powerful message and its timing during the post-war period made it a significant piece in Ejeagha’s discography.
Meanwhile, in Uwa Ngebde Ka Mma, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha uses Igbo proverbs and idioms to deliver a didactic message to the youth. The song admonishes young people to spend their youth wisely to ensure a rewarding and comfortable old age. Also, Ejeagha’s ability to weave life lessons into his music makes this song a timeless piece. It continues to be relevant across generations.
Furthermore, Onye Uri Utaba is a folk song that tells the story of a poor man who steals and blames his actions on poverty. Gentleman Mike Ejeagha uses this narrative to admonish that one should not let poverty push them to lose their sense of dignity and integrity. Also, the song’s moral lesson is clear: despite life's challenges, maintaining one’s principles is crucial.

As his viral fame introduces him to a new generation, here's a chance to explore the remarkable career and legacy of this Igbo music icon, beyond the catchy "Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo" lyric that's currently making waves online.
Here are 5 things you need to know about Igbo Folk Music Legend Mike Ejeagha:
Firstly, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha was born in August 1932 in Imezi Owa, Eziagu Local Government of Enugu State. His journey into music began at a young age when he participated in an Ogene group during his elementary school days. Ejeagha’s fascination with the guitar blossomed after witnessing Moses Aduba, also known as Moscow, and Cyprian Uzochiawa play the instrument at the Coal Camp in Enugu. These early influences inspired him to learn the guitar, setting the foundation for his illustrious musical career. By 1950, Ejeagha had perfected his guitar skills and formed his first band, Mike Ejeagha and Merry-makers.
Secondly, Mike Ejeagha’s fame started to grow significantly after an audition with the late Atu Ona, the then Controller of the Nigerian Broadcasting Service (NBS). Ejeagha was given a program titled "Guitar Playtime," which allowed him to play on the radio and produce musical programs. This exposure helped him form a larger group, the Premier Dance Band. His fame soared further after the Nigerian Civil War. This was when he recorded the album Omekagu with Polygram Records, later Phillips Records. Also, his role in the radio program Akuko n’egwu (storytelling in music) on the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), now Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), cemented his place in the hearts of many as he shared a new folktale weekly.

Additionally, this recognition highlights his lasting impact on the genre. Meanwhile, in 2022, plans for a biographical documentary on his life were announced, directed by Michael Chineme Ike and produced by Micstreams Productions. ]]>The post Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo: Why social media is constantly reviving old Nigerian songs appeared first on NotjustOk.
]]>Short video-sharing platforms like TikTok, Reels and Shorts have been instrumental in the growth of Afrobeats in the last few years. Songs like Calm Down by Rema, Love Nwantiti by CKay and Essence by WizKid were able to dominate local and international charts because of social media. User-generated content by influencers, content creators, and comedians on the internet has been the secret behind the success of most global songs like Bécane by French-Cameroonian soul singer and song, Yamê among others.
Just as social media has been instrumental in the success of these songs, it has always been responsible for the regurgitation of old Nigerian songs. Today, we have Mike Ejeagha benefiting from platforms like TikTok and Reels, which were launched in 2016 and 2020, respectively. These platforms both contributed to the sudden revival of Mike Ejeagha’s Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche (Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo) released in 1983.
Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, a 90-year-old musician, is currently trending on social media after comedian Brain Jotter used his record Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche in a viral video. Gentleman Mike Ejeagha's viral song Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche was used by Brain Jotter in a video posted on his Instagram account on July 5, 2024, and has been viewed 29.1 million times with over 30,000 comments, while TikTok has 19.6 million views and over 23,000 comments. The viral video has sparked a social media trend, with over 7,000 reels and 29,000 TikTok posts featuring the song created in the last week.
It's not surprising that old songs from the 1900s to the 2010s are getting a chance to shine in 2024. These songs shaped the childhood and adolescence of the majority of today's youth. Nostalgia is undoubtedly one of the many reasons why modern songs featuring samples from older releases, such as Love Me Jeje by Tems and Sitting on Top of the World by Burna Boy, can shine. First, it creates a marketing narrative, and second, it taps into most young people's residual knowledge and rekindles a sense of gratification, similar to how they felt when the sampled song had its moment. This type of nostalgia in music is a currency and one of the simplest ways for generations to interact.
Speaking with Adeayo Adebiyi, a music editor at Pulse Nigeria, he believes people often find old music creating an emotional connection that will occasionally resurface.
“So the trend is a result of people going back to rediscover music that shaped our past in a bid to create from it,” he said.
“Lastly, it shows that music from our past will play a big role in shaping the future. If you notice, there’s a growing trend in sampling and interpolations. Tems, AG, Pheelz, Olamide, Chike, and co. are artists who have sampled old music this year,” he added.
According to Motolani Alake a Label & Marketing Manager at Virgin Music,
“The long and short of it: The mainstream Pop sound has expired. People need newness.”
“The Afro-pop sound expires every five years and people need new stuff. That Asake-Piano-fusion, with a tinge and fuji and rap sustained it. Rema's album is polarized because people don't recognise 'new sound' beyond what's known.
“There's a reason why sounds from Ejeagha and Desperate Chicks are making waves on Tiktok. People are yearning for new stuff and because nothing is new, and 'newness' is usually just repurposing the past or an evolution of the past, we're seeing the past get repurposed,” he added.
Speaking with Sampson Malachy, the co-founder of Maxtreme Inc, the trend is not going to stop. In his words, “The trend will not stop. In fact I see majors going for old catalogs in years to come.”
Tochi Louis, a creative marketing consultant, believes it's purely organic. In his words, “It's not what you sit down and plan. Right now, we don't know the next song that will be picked up. But it's mostly because of the song. It resonated with the people years ago, was heavily consumed then, and thus will most likely be consumed now.”

Burna Boy has become an inspirational figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry. The multiple award-winning singer who has often challenged the barriers and looked for a way to break from the norm has now become one of the most influential figures in music to date not just in Nigeria or Africa but in the world as a whole.
The singer who turns 33 today, Tuesday, July 2, 2024, has always received praise for his historical landmarks as they come with the years.
However, it is only right we mark such an occasion with a compilation of Burna Boy's iconic records and achievements over the years in the industry which is why we have curated a list of records Burna did not just become the first to hold but rather the only to hold in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
In 2023 with the release of his 'I Told Them' album, Burna Boy became the first and only Nigerian artist to debut at number one on the official UK Albums chart breaking his record of the highest peak position he held at number 2 with his 'Love Damini' album.
To date, 'I Told Them' remains the first and only album to ever achieve such a feat.
On January 22, 2024, Burna Boy was unveiled as the first Nigerian artist to ever grace the stage and deliver an unforgettable performance at the main ceremony of the Grammy Awards.
This achievement followed his initial achievement of performing at the pre-ceremony and also bagging an award in 2021 with his album, 'Twice As Tall.'
Burna Boy took his 'I Told Them' tour to Toronto, Canada in 2024 made history and set a new record by becoming the first African artist to sell out the 19,000-capacity Scotiabank Arena for two consecutive days.
On Saturday, February 24, 2024, he performed at the iconic venue, teasing fans with an upcoming project as he premiered an unreleased song.
This, however, wasn't the only highlight of the first day. Having already sold out a concert in Chicago, the singer thrilled the audience with a medley of his biggest hits.
Despite the back-to-back shows, Burna Boy showed no signs of fatigue on the second sold-out night. He delivered another unforgettable performance, creating a unique experience for the fans who had come to witness his renowned live show once again.
Burna Boy set a new record of the first and only African artist to sell out the 90,000 capacity London Stadium not once but twice.
The singer took his 'Love Damini' tour to the London stadium in 2023 and followed up once again with the 'I Told Them' tour in 2024 selling out the same venue once again.
For Burna Boy, achievements and new records have become inevitable and are always associated with his name. It is important to celebrate such a music icon in the industry today.

]]>Following the recently concluded BET Awards 2024 and the lack of nominations of some of Africa's biggest stars, here is a list of artists and albums that were eligible but didn't receive a nomination.
What is the eligibility period for the BET Awards?
As per the media powerhouse Billboard, the eligibility period for the 2024 BET Awards spans from March 2023 to March 2024. This period allows for the inclusion of all songs and albums released within this timeframe, making them eligible for nomination consideration at the awards ceremony.
Artists who have experienced significant success during this time period are also eligible for nomination.
Davido
After the release of his Grammy-nominated Timeless album, many believe that Davido's international success skyrocketed, firmly establishing him as one of the most accomplished African artists on the global stage.
Following the album's release, the singer embarked on a worldwide tour, captivating audiences in some of the most prestigious venues across the US, UK, and Canada.
However, fans and industry observers were surprised and disappointed when Davido's name was not included in the list of nominees for the Best International Act at the BET Awards 2024.
Rema
Despite winning multiple awards and hosting an iconic sold-out concert at the O2 Arena in 2023, the singer and performer Rema was not included in the list of nominees for the 2024 BET Awards.
It seems that his significant achievements have been overlooked by the award ceremony organizers.
Uncle Waffles
An explosive 2023 US and Europe Tour as well as the release of her highly acclaimed EP did not earn Uncle Waffles a BET Awards nod in the best International Act category to the shock of many.
It remains to be seen if there are new specifications or criteria involved in the awards nomination process.
