In line with its philosophy and character as an impact-driven social initiative, the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has lent its voice to the lingering humanitarian crisis in the war-torn African country of Somalia.

The 62-year-old democratic nation, which lies in the Horn of Africa, has been encumbered with civil wars and security challenges for the past three decades, throwing its most vulnerable populations, especially women and young girls into a nightmare of untold hardship.

Partnering the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in its advocacy and humanitarian efforts, AFRIMA has urged political stakeholders and people of influence to shower support towards the UNFPA’s aid efforts in Somalia.

As the much-anticipated 8th AFRIMA, tagged ‘Teranga Edition’ draws near, AFRIMA has launched the #HopeForSomalia campaign, which includes championing policy-stimulating petitions and fostering fundraisers, to help alleviate the harsh impact of the crisis on Somalians, especially Somali women and young girls. The Teranga Edition is scheduled to be held in Dakar, Senegal on 12-15 January 2023.

Commenting on the situation, AFRIMA’s Executive Producer/President, Mr Mike Dada, said: “Like the situation in Somalia, a popular narrative about Africa is that it is a war-torn habitat, without any hope for sustainable peace in sight. It’s saddening; because the danger of that narrative is that it discourages actual solutions. Somalia has enjoyed peace for years and even bears a reputation for being one of Africa’s most pro-democratic societies. We cannot watch and fold our arms, seeing innocent women, children, and Somalis alike have their lives and dreams cut short by the conflict, terrorism or this climate crisis, without any form of aid or relief.

“In AFRIMA, we abide by the ethos of family. We are one Africa, and whatever burdens Somalia should burden the rest of the continent. We are committed to ensuring that we help contribute to the long-awaited peace-restoration, famine prevention and drought- rehabilitation efforts in Somalia. We thank our partners the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), for their great work in Somalia, and for calling our attention to this. It is especially shocking to see how great these women and girls are suffering, and how high the maternal mortality rate is as a ripple effect of this war. We believe Africa will return to its position as a culturally progressive, innovative and peace-loving continent, once again.”

Commenting on the development, UNFPA Representative in Somalia, Niyi Ojuolape, said that women and girls are the most hit by the crisis, urging for support to end the gory situation, and to ameliorate the impact. He said, “Somalia is facing a complex and devastating crisis. The country has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world. Conflict and drought-led displacements are adding to the strain on the already limited sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and weak health system. Lack of nutrition and access to healthcare contribute to the poor health of women and girls. Pregnant and lactating women, in particular, are at risk due to the negative effects of malnutrition on pregnancy outcomes and newborn survival.

“Over 82% of those displaced are women and children, including 1.95 million women and girls of reproductive age. In the next three months, it is estimated that there will be 918 deliveries per day, with 15% of pregnant women experiencing complications. Without access to qualified birth attendants, health services and facilities, maternal and newborn mortality will increase further.

“Rising food prices, water shortages, death of livestock, and loss of livelihoods have led to multiple displacements, making women and girls more vulnerable to increased gender-based violence (GBV) and exploitation. Data shows a 21% increase in reported rape cases, a 60% increase in reported cases of intimate partner violence, and a 20% increase in the number of women and girls accessing lifesaving GBV response services since last year.”

Ojuolape also pleaded with the international donor community to “urgently prioritise the support of quality SRH services and GBV prevention and response to help prevent death, disease, and disability for women and girls in Somalia.” to help achieve long-term development and peace in Somalia.

In partnership with the African Union Commission, AFRIMA is the pinnacle of African music globally.

Ahead of the highly anticipated 8th edition of the All-Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) tagged ‘Teranga Edition’ scheduled to hold in Dakar, Senegal on 12-15 January 2023, global entertainment service YouTube, has entered into a partnership with AFRIMA, to help provide artist-focused educational sessions and live streaming support for the awards.

AFRIMA, which is the pinnacle of recognition for African music globally is poised to ensure that the annual 4-day festival is broadcasted to music lovers and stakeholders across the globe.

Importantly, YouTube will be conducting workshop sessions to African creatives at the Africa Music Business Summit (one of the events at 8th AFRIMA) to educate on visibility across the global creative ecosystem on a digital platform.

The global streaming service will also be partnering with the All Africa Music Awards on a special incubator programme dubbed, AFRIMA Creative Academy, which aims to empower one million Africans (and in diaspora) in the music and creative industry in the next five years. The YouTube link for live streaming will be available on AFRIMA’s YouTube page @Youtube.com/AFRIMAAWARDS.

Subscribe for free to the channel and catch the African Music Business Summit live on Friday Jan 13, 2023, from 9.00am-4.30pm (WAT); while the AFRIMA Music Village will be live later that day from 6.00pm - Till dawn (WAT). Finally, the 8th AFRIMA main awards ceremony will be streamed live from the Red Carpet- 4.30pm (WAT), while the main awards will start at 7.30pm (WAT).Speaking on the development, the Head, Culture Division at the African Union Commission (AUC), Angela Martins said,

“It is important that we spread our efforts to promote inclusivity and ensure that the world can see the impact of AFRIMA at the global centre stage. It is easier for people to now follow up with the award ceremony via their smartphone or other devices. It is also vital we continue to create more education for creators to help them thrive in their crafts, and we are happy to align with YouTube on achieving this shared vision.”

On his part, AFRIMA’s President and Executive Producer, Mr Mike Dada, lauded the streaming service for their support towards the African creative economy. He said,

“We have all seen the rise in circulation of short form audio-visual content on these services and how they have helped to promote African music and creators on a global scale. We believe that sharing knowledge will be a veritable means to expand the revenue funnel for our creators at home and also boost foreign direct investment. In the spirit of uplifting the African creative ecosystem, we are excited to work with a driven and innovative team like YouTube.”

YouTube’s Head of Music Sub-Saharan Africa, Addy Awofisayo said,

“YouTube has been consistent in its support for Africa creatives over the years and has played an essential role in the discovery and development of African music & culture and exporting it to audiences and listeners worldwide, enabling collaborations both locally and globally.

“We are excited for our partnership with AFRIMA and the African Union to deepen our relationship with the music stakeholders on the continent, provide educational support for African creatives, and to help music fans be a part of some of the most iconic music moments as they unfold live on YouTube, wherever they are around the globe.”

As the whole world gears towards the 8th edition of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, which will be held from January 12 to 15, 2023, African music lovers are encouraged to keep voting intensively for their desired winners, using the voting portal live at www.afrima.org and take part in the events on social media platforms (IG/TikTok - @afrima.official ; Facebook - Afrimawards; Twitter - @afrimaofficial; LinkedIn - AFRIMA). Anderson Obiagwu

AFRIMMA CEO Anderson Obiagwu on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, took to his social media platform on Instagram to share his honest opinion about the loss of Wizkid at the 64th edition of the Grammy Awards.

He highlighted the fact that even though Western validation is a welcomed development; it is not something African music can necessarily be judged on.

He mentioned that African music is developing at an exponential rate and its impact can not be denied and it is also up to Africans to lift up the sound and the brand.

On Sunday, December 12th, 2021, at 6 pm GMT, the world is set to witness an unforgettable virtual award show and a showcase of the best talent across the continent, which will be live-streamed on YouTube. Superstar comedian Bovi and elegant screen goddess Tashara Parker will co-host the ceremony.

The unique theme Flavors of Africa draws inspiration from the diverse flavors found on the continent. Like the people, the food, and the culture, the music comes in different melodic flavors and this virtual ceremony will be a musical experience of the different flavors of African music. The music performances at AFRIMMA's Flavors of Africa are coming in different flavors that include South Africa’s Focalistic, Kenya’s Sauti Sol, Nigeria’s sensations CKay, Ruger, and Ladipoe as well as Mozambican stars Dj Tarico and the Yaba Buluku gang. There would be performances by the Togolese duo Toofan, the Tanzanian Darling Nandy, and many more.

This year, AFRIMMA is partnering with YouTube Music as part of their #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund initiative to celebrate Africa’s musical talent as African music stars continue to receive glowing attention worldwide. AFRIMMA is the biggest African music award ceremony in the diaspora that creates a platform to promote the diversity of African music. Every year, top African talents from across the world come together on the same stage to celebrate African culture and music.

Having the ability to use their platform to further push our narrative of crossing boundaries with music is going to propel our mission forward. YouTube coming onboard only means more exciting times are coming for African music, and together we can celebrate African music, talents, and culture. This is a new dawn, and we are elated to showcase Africa to the world with YouTube as an official partner.

Addy Awofisayo, Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa, YouTube, states , "We are thrilled to unite the impactful work of the #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund with AFRIMMA and their dedication to amplifying the diversity of African music. AFRIMMA 2020 VIRTUAL AWARDS – An Unforgettable Destination Africa Trip

When the organizing body for AFRIMMA announced the theme of the 7th edition as ‘Destination Africa’, not many realized this was about to be the journey of a lifetime. History was made as the first African music awards to be held virtually aired on AFRIMMA YouTube page. It was a fun experience, a musical journey into the different parts of Africa hosted by WFAA’s Tashara Parker.

Proudly sponsored by Majority official, the AFRIMMA private jet took off in Dallas, Texas the spiritual home of the AFRIMMA awards, touching down in West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa. The performances were exuberant and colorful and left viewers yearning for more. Nigeria’s new school King Rema gave an eclectic performance, Cape Verdean Soraia Ramos was an example in sonic beauty, while veteran Fally Ipupa showed why he is evergreen in African music. Some of the performers on the night include dance king Poco Lee, Congo’s Gaz Mawete, the Ugandan star Eddy Kenzo, South Africa’s rap queen Nadia Nakai and man of the moment Master KG.

South African sensation with the viral hits emerged the biggest winner of the night, bagging the Artist of The Year Award, Song of The Year, Best Male Southern Africa as well as Best Collaboration with Burna Boy on Jerusalema remix.

With their second consecutive year as the title sponsor of the AFRIMMA awards and presenting sponsor of Artist of The Year, MAJORITY’s Co-founder and CEO, Magnus Larsson said “In light of all that we have collectively experienced this year, the AFRIMMA 2020 Awards means more than ever before. As a community focused company, we are extremely proud of being part in realizing this one-of-a-kind celebration of African excellence and look forward to elevating more of the ambitions that AFRIMMA shines a light on”.

There were simultaneous viewing parties in Dallas and Houston as the rest of the world joined in via YouTube.  Anderson Obiagwu, Founder/CEO AFRIMMA was filled with delight and stated “There were initial doubts about pulling this off, but seeing we pulled this off today fills me with so much joy and I want to express my appreciation to our sponsors, the AFRIMMA team, the artists, dancers, video editors and everybody that played a part in making history today”. The AFRIMMA 2020 experience is one that can only be described as mind-blowing, a journey of a lifetime into the sounds of Africa.

AFRIMMA is the biggest African music award ceremony in Diaspora that creates a platform to promote the diversity of African music. Every year, top African talents across the world come on the same stage to celebrate African culture and music. This year’s nominees list features a raft of established talents but also stars a host of new talents in what seems to be a major paradigm shift on the African music scene. Revered names like Burna Boy, Diamond Platnumz, Aya Nakamura, Soraia Ramos, Davido, Master KG all earned nominations while newbies like Oxlade, J Derobie, Zeynab and so on got their first AFRIMMA nominations. This year promises to be a lot of fun and excitement with many new names propping up the list as well as musical behemoths who have maintained an unbelievable run of consistency.

The African Muzik Magazine Awards AFRIMMA has unlocked a new level with the announcement of its first Virtual Awards show. The 7th Edition of Africa’s biggest music award in Diaspora sponsored by Majority is set to be a virtual affair due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this is not going to stop AFRIMMA from flying the African cultural flag as we countdown to an epoch and history making event on November 15th, 2020.

The AFRIMMA Virtual Awards 2020 is set to be the first of its kind in the African music world with performances coming from different artists around the world and audience catching the performances, speeches and award presentations on multiple streaming devices. Anticipation is high and excitement is hitting the rooftop with the release of the nominees list. This is your chance to make a statement for your favorite artist. Head to www.afrimma.com and vote now for your favourite artists and songs while we prepare for an epic show in November that would solidify the fast growing African music genre.
