Hamisu Breaker brings freshness to Hausa music

SHARE

The Hausas, fondly referred to as Arewa on Twitter, are one of Africa's most populous ethnic groups, primarily found in northern Nigeria and southern Niger in West Africa. Their music is commonly categorized into ceremonial music (rok'on fada), royal praise songs (yabon sarakai), and traditional folk music.

Hausa folk music has significantly contributed to the development of Nigerian music. However, the inability to understand the Hausa language has hindered its acceptance, similar to any songs in a language that listeners do not comprehend. People tend to gravitate towards music they can understand, even if it lacks lyrical depth.

Nonetheless, music can serve as an adventure for those who love it and view it as such.

On certain days, individuals can travel the world through music. It is no exaggeration to say that playlists can be incredibly diverse. They may include genres from various parts of the globe, from native Russian music to Fuji and Indian songs. Artists like Namadingo, an African musician from Malawi known as 'Dr. Namadingo' by his fans on YouTube, also feature prominently. He gained fame for his mash-up with the late Giddes Chalamanda titled "Linny Hoo."

While artists such as Magnito, MI Abaga, Sixfootplus, ClassiQ, and others are making strides in Hausa rap, Hamisu Breaker is not rapping; instead, he has elevated production by infusing modern beats without losing its traditional essence.

Who is Hamisu Breaker?

His real name is 'Hamisu Sa’id Yusuf', and was born in Kano. If you mention his name in the commercial city of Kano, Nigeria, you'd see women, men, and children alike, going gaga. Simply put, they love him.

Hamisu began his music career while still in secondary school and released several songs before launching his first album. His name resonates with every man, woman, youth, and child in the commercial city of Kano.
