It’s been over a decade since Wizkid’s debut album, Superstar, launched him into stardom, solidifying his place as one of his generation’s most promising stars. Since then, he has delivered standout projects such as Ayo, Sounds From the Other Side, and most notably, Made in Lagos, arguably his finest and most successful album to date.

Wizkid has continuously evolved, redefining his sound since Sounds From the Other Side, a shift that culminated in the globally acclaimed Made in Lagos. This transformation, likely influenced by his exposure to diverse musical landscapes, moved him away from the high-energy "kpalongo" sound that once dominated his catalogue and the industry at large. Instead, his recent work leans towards a more relaxed, soulful style, enriched with lush instrumentation. However, his last two projects—More Love, Less Ego (2022) and S2 (2023)—while maintaining his refined direction didn’t resonate as expected, leaving him in search of a project that could rival or surpass the success of Made in Lagos.

Titled Morayo after his late mother, whom he lost in 2023, fans anticipated Wizkid’s most introspective and heartfelt project to date. However, rather than centering solely on introspection, the singer chose to highlight the various personas of his artistry since his debut—infused with romance and a touch of playful sensuality that remains a core ingredient of his music.

The album begins on a reflective note, sampling Fuji legend Kwam 1 De Ultimate’s performance at Wizkid’s mother’s funeral. The project’s first feature comes from Asake, whose appearance on the album was a pleasant surprise, especially considering their recent collaboration on the Grammy-nominated song MMS, which was highly praised by music lovers. Unlike the solemn and reflective tone of MMS, their new track Bad Girl takes a more uptempo approach, celebrating a lady with playful admiration. While it’s a decent record, it falls short of being exceptional. Given the massive success of MMS, Bad Girl might struggle to maintain momentum and could fade quickly, unable to compete with the impact of their initial collaboration both sonically and in terms of potential.

Wizkid’s transition since Sounds From the Other Side, which positioned him as a soft-spoken, soul-stirring R&B artist, continues to evolve impressively, often yielding stellar results within this spectrum. Time is one of the laid-back tracks on the project, delivering a well-deserved dose of lush melodies. The tempo seamlessly carries into Piece of My Heart, a silky R&B duet featuring American singer Brent Faiyaz. The track is particularly noteworthy for its structure as a two-in-one record, shifting sounds within the same song. Its exceptional delivery and unique arrangement make it another standout on the album, solidifying its place as one of the lead singles preceding the project’s release.

Known for infusing Caribbean influences into his music through tracks like Joro, Mamacita, and others, Wizkid explores similar themes with Break Me Down. This track blends sensuality with an upbeat tempo, merging Afro-Caribbean vibes with an R&B flair. Its groove is enhanced by a stellar yet understated performance from an unknown songstress. The tempo resets to a party-starters template with Bend, a proper Afrobeats banger that many anticipated. Slightly heavier than Kese, it has all the makings of a club anthem and could easily become a standout track from the project. In contrast, A Million Blessings feels underwhelming and skippable. Despite the orchestra-inspired production laced with Afrobeats elements that attempt to elevate it, the track lacks the energy and flair to leave a lasting impression, coming across as an album filler.

Wizkid’s signature soulful, feel-good sound makes a strong return on Après Minuit and Bad For You, featuring French rapper Tiakola and American singer Jazmine Sullivan, respectively. These tracks showcase his ability to carefully select collaborators who seamlessly complement his artistry. This approach has paid off in the past with tracks like True Love featuring Tay Iwar and Projexx from Made in Lagos, and the pattern continues to shine here.

While Soji leans on its Afrobeats roots, it doesn’t rise above being another filler. On the other hand, Don’t Care delves deeper into indigenous Afrobeat vibes, offering a more grounded and authentic Wiz. Meanwhile, Slow and Lose are beautifully delivered soft-tempo tracks that resonate with Wizkid’s introspective side, adding a refreshing calm to the album’s flow. The project ends on a high note with Pray, a track that ties together the album’s reflective and celebratory themes.

With P2J producing fourteen tracks and P.Priime and DAMEDAME handling the remaining two, the album boasts a rich and robust soundscape, instrumentation, and production. However, the production could have benefitted from more diverse input to balance out the P2J-heavy contributions.

While Morayo strays beyond the female-centric, romantic, and sensual themes that often characterise Wizkid’s music, it falls short of presenting a cohesive core theme. Whether tied to the significance of its title or simply as a standalone project, the album lacks a unifying thematic structure, leaving it feeling somewhat disjointed. It doesn’t deliver the kind of immersive experience that channels the listener’s thoughts in a specific direction—perhaps towards romance, as has been the hallmark of some of Wizkid’s most memorable works.

Nonetheless, the project is more inclusive, showcasing nearly every artistic phase of Wizkid’s career. It marks an intentional return to crafting proper Afrobeats bangers, a dimension of his brand that has been notably missing in recent years. Morayo is a blend of Wizkid’s signature styles, presented on a more mature and well-rounded level, making it accessible to fans across different stages of life. Despite these highlights, Morayo as a whole feels decent but doesn’t quite possess the standout quality needed to compete with several other Nigerian albums released in 2024. It’s a solid addition to Wizkid’s catalogue but lacks the groundbreaking appeal that defines his most celebrated work.

However, things have taken a shaky turn, as the singer has not yet been able to surpass MIL, arguably one of his best and most successful albums. His last two projects—More Love, Less Ego (2022) and S2 (2023)—didn't receive the expected reception, leaving him in search of a project that could surpass his previous success.

Wizkid has been redefining his sound since Sounds from the Other Side, a transformation that was cemented with Made in Lagos. It's clear that his exposure has deeply influenced his music. Instead of the high-energy "kpalongo" sound he's known for and the industry was riddled with, his recent work has been more laid-back, soulful, and rich in instrumentation. Therefore, if Morayo is delivered properly, it has the potential to give the singer the much-needed breakthrough he seeks. Although it's unlikely to surpass the monumental success of Made in Lagos, the album's significance, particularly with its title, suggests it may be more well-rounded than the female-centric projects Wizkid has been putting out recently.

Fans can expect a more introspective Wizkid on Morayo (as seen in Asake's MMS), yet still conscious of his superstar status—reflecting his experiences with wealth, women, and lifestyle. The album’s sound is expected to be rich, with an intentional display of some proper Afrobeats bangers. Overall, Morayo is expected to blend elements of Joro-era Wizkid, Blessed-era Wizkid, and Frames-era Wizkid to present a more mature, well-rounded artist who can resonate with a wider audience, no matter what phase of life they are in.

To provide more context and perspective, NotJustOk spoke to some music executives as well as dedicated Wizkid fans to hear their expectations for the upcoming album. Their thoughts are as follows:

Babalola Osogbiye (Uncle Bilo), Head Of Marketing, ONErpm Africa) said:

"For Wizkid's Morayo album, Wizkid is a global superstar and, arguably, one of the most celebrated forerunners of African music. So, I expect nothing less of these to be embedded in the album. Sound-wise, I expect it to be global, with a shade or with all shades of African music elements. Because, I mean, the album title is native, which should tell us everything that we need to know already. I believe the album would have, like, shades of African music elements because we shouldn't alienate ourselves from our roots; it is the foundation of all that it is with our music. But from the business perspective, we should expect sounds that cement Wizkid's global presence in the global music atmosphere, just like he did with Essence."

Moses Kusemi, Operations Manager of Boomplay, opines that, personally, he does not have big expectations for the album as Wizkid's sound has become very predictable. Over the years, it has been the same Wizkid. He goes on to state that the singer hasn't had a wow factor in his recent projects. Even though he is looking forward to Morayo and wants to be surprised by the singer, he doesn’t have any high expectations for the album.

An ardent fan of Wizkid and accorded as many as a frontier of the Wizkid FC Fanbase, Basito says:

"Morayo is coming, and I know for sure Wizkid is going to deliver; he’s never let us down, and he’s definitely not going to start now with Morayo. Quality is never a question when it comes to a Wiz album. The only thing I would say is I hope he does right by the album this time around and pushes it to every corner of the world. The world can do a lot with a Wizkid album right now, and it’s only right if they’re alerted about it through every channel there is."

Another ardent fan and music enthusiast, Lasisi Farouk, says:

"The thing is, you know, Morayo is something special to him, so I know that he's going to do something a bit like Made in Lagos because I think that's Wizkid's new identity and sound, and he has producers that he is used to (around him). So, you know, I think those are the sounds that are pleasing to people's ears; they want to listen to something like Made in Lagos again. And it's going to come from a place of pain and pleasure; it's also going to come from a woman's perspective. That's Wiz for you. I know he's going to come along with his identity: traditional drums, saxophones, pianos, and all those sounds we like. It's going to come out very nice and smooth, and he has anticipated it well. Wizzy is a perfectionist; he wants his stuff to sound exactly the way he envisions. I'm expecting something new too. I'd like to see him do something he hasn't done before. Something nice."

Another fan, Theophilus, is highly optimistic about the project and can’t wait to have it. He says:

"Honestly, I'm expecting nothing short of greatness; beautiful and relatable songs. We all know how meticulous Wiz is when making his songs. I believe all tracks will reflect this. I'm just patiently awaiting this album, as I need some fresh and soulful music."

Adetomi says: "I'm expecting a lot of emotions from it, especially since he recently lost his mum, and we all know Wizkid loves his mum. So yeah, that, and also his usual serenade on love and hustle."

This knockout competition, which started with 64 talented Afrobeats artists from West, South, and East Africa, recently concluded its Round of 16, spotlighting the top four artists with the highest votes in the second knockout stage, and then narrowing down to the final two.

Wizkid, coming from Group A, defeated Mavin starboy Rema in the semi-final, while Burna Boy triumphed over YBNL star Asake. The Starboy Frontier eventually went on to triumph over Grammy-winning Burna Boy in the final, with a flawless victory of 72% to 28% in voting.

If you are not a "nepo baby," having to strive for yourself and "enter the streets" to get things done without support or soft landing, you can be accorded as a "street child," hence "Lungu child."

Also, Asake is from Lagos Island in Nigeria, an urban area of the early Lagos that has now largely become a "Lungu," therefore every allusion to the singer's identity based on the album title ticks. Although a "Lungu Boy," Asake on this album documented his so-far-gone lifestyle and how international he has become, with hip-hop influences in his music, skating, face tattoos, western fashion, etc., which are dominantly foreign entities.

The album kicks off with a soul-soothing sampling of Asa's classic 'Eye Adaba,' a powerful and prayerful song that is perfect to start your day; your journey. Asake starts the album on this note, creating the impression that the album is about to take the listener on a surreal journey. The one-minute, twenty-one-second intro had the Asa sample run for forty seconds before Asake took over with a "step on the gas" delivery, accompanied by a switch in beat from being solemn to a slightly fast tempo. A good intro that warms you up for what is to come.

The highly anticipated collaboration with Wizkid titled 'MMS' follows. When the tracklist dropped, one would have wondered why a heavyweight like Wizkid would be quickly introduced on the album instead of the usual way of delaying the big features to a later time on the album. However, listening to the highly enjoyable and introspective mid-tempo song, one would see why Asake made it the second track. After the soothing Asa sample, it only made sense to follow it with such a feel-good song. As expected, the mid-tempo tune with an R&B feel was a familiar ground for Wizkid to deliver smoothly, strictly staying on topic too.

The tempo in the album increases with 'Mood'; although not in party mode, it was just enough to have you nodding your head. It's another feel-good song that was perfect to follow the previous one. The fourth song 'Heart' kicks off with a Spanish guitar to usher in a love tune that saw French-Gabonese singer Anäis Cardot give an impressive bridge and noticeable back-up vocal to sweeten the song. The song switches from time to time from its Southern American feel to a Kanye hip-hop type beat, and knowing that Asake flows almost like a rapper, his delivery on the song was good. It is a decent song, but not exceptional. 'Worldwide' follows, although a familiar log drum-based tune that speaks on how "blown" Mr. Money has become. The delivery, production, and overall quality of the song seemed lazy.

The already-released 'Active' is a high-energy tune that seamlessly blends Afrobeats and hip-hop, showcasing the unique sides of Asake and the featured act, Travis Scott. Another catchy composition deployed by producer Sarz on the song is him interpolating Adewale Ayuba & Jazzman Olofin's 'Raise the Roof,' which ended up being a major highlight of the song.

The tempo is again dropped with 'Suru', another introspective tune themed on being patient in life, featuring English rapper Stormzy, whose verse was delivered seamlessly. "Ise oluwa ko seni to ye," a familiar line from Apala maestro Haruna Musiliu Ishola, saw the need for a traditional feel to the song, which was not properly executed and represented with just gan gan drums; other traditional components should have come to play.

The western influence on Asake was shown with 'Skating.' The mission-impossible-action-film-like beat was dominant throughout the song; however, the singer struggled with thematic depth and delivery when singing about his newly found hobby.

Asake reunites with his primary producer, Magicsticks, who came through with the log-drum-dredged soft landing for the singer on 'Wave'. As a way to show that the "Lungu boy" has indeed gone international, Asake enlisted another British rapper, Central Cee, for the fan favourite song.

The album experienced a noticeable upgrade with 'Mentally.' It was the confident, delivery-conscious, and precise Asake known to be a hit machine on that record. The run is complimented by another monster jam produced by Sarz, 'Uhh Yeah.' The fuji prowess of the singer came to full flesh, and it was an instant show of the "Ololade mi Asake" that we know, especially the second verse. Sarz went nuts on the production. Interestingly, the song bore a resemblance to rapper Reminise's highly underrated club banger 'Fantasi,' which was also produced by Sarz. The enjoyable run ends with 'I Swear' another lazy attempt (especially with hook) by the singer to deliver a Lamba (a street slang for being poetic while braggadocios about one's ability or something), a terrain he is familiar with and has excellently delivered in previous albums with songs like What's Up My G.

Another letdown follows with 'Ligali', a slang that emanates from the Fuji world, especially from Fuji icon Wasiu Alabi Pasuma Wonder, which loosely translates to "mingle." One would have expected a flamboyantly delivered Fuji-themed song flanked by all the traditional components needed to leave listeners giving it their all on the dance floor, drenched in sweat, but they rather met an Afro-fusion leaned tune, which does not necessarily do the job. As the experiment continues, Asake embarks on a Caribbean dancehall voyage with Brazilian singer Ludmilla on 'Whine'. The singer again clearly struggled with the ragga persona he tried to embrace and, as a result, created a song that might be easily forgotten by many.

The curtain closes on the album with a bonus track. The highly anticipated 'Fuji Vibe', whose snippet already cemented in the hearts of his listeners, was elongated and flamboyantly performed by the singer alongside his band The Composers - like one would have expected of 'Ligali.' The 5-minute-long song, at a point, transforms from its Fuji stance to the new-age deep trenches sound known as Mara which encompasses dance moves like Faaja, Ogba, Mara Pupo, Scissors Feet, and a slew of others. It was engineered specifically to be performed and enjoyed live. A moment.

The production on the album was quite decent, with standout performances like Sarz's brillance on the house-infused log-drum-dominated 'Mentally', the Fuji-EDM 'Uhh Yeahh," and the Afro-fusion laced with hip-hop display on 'Active'. The veteran producer and DJ constantly make it known that he is a godfather in the game with his sensational productions over the years. His protegee, P.Prime, produced seven tracks off the album, with 'Start', 'MMS', and 'My Heart', proving to be standout productions that showed his versatility as a young producer and the immense prospect he is to the Nigerian music scene. However, songs like 'Suru' could have had more components to properly deliver the tune.

Magicsticks came through on 'Wave' as well as his contribution on 'Fuji Vibe' alongside Asake and the composers—two solid productions off the album. The Caribbean feel on 'Whine' was accomplished thanks to Haitian producer Sak-Pase, though it's not a standout production.

Asake struggled with songwriting on this album; unlike his previous albums, many music enthusiasts have linked it to the probability of his label boss, Olamide, being absent from the process. Maybe. Away from the dominantly subpar lyricism on the album, in Asake's bid to explore, he struggled with his delivery as well; not a lot of Lambas could be be enjoyed from the neo-Fuji act on this project.

Because of how experimental the album is, the sonic sequence was not as cohesive as his first two albums. Working with three unfamiliar producers might have been a reason, unlike the usual Magicsticks-Asake collab that has been consistently showcased over the years. The experimentation on the album resulted in a non-cohesive project, as songs were scattered all over without proper direction. However, on thematic cohesion and depth, it's two ways: if the singer's "Lungu Boy" is supposed to tell the story of a "Lungu Boy" still in the "Lungu," it failed. However, if it's to tell the story of a "Lungu boy" that has gone worldwide but still very much in touch with his roots, the choice of track titles, song themes, and sound direction tallies, although not excellently executed by the artiste.

In conclusion, Asake's 'Lungu Boy' is a decent album; the artiste was bold to have experimented with new soundscapes, but the outcome wasn't great. Although it tends to become one of his commercially biggest albums, as singles can easily propel a project in the modern streaming era. 'Lungu Boy' is the least enjoyable album Asake has released so far, failing to match the standard and qualities of his previously released album.

Songs like Calm Down by Rema, Love Nwantiti by CKay and Essence by WizKid were able to dominate local and international charts because of social media. User-generated content by influencers, content creators, and comedians on the internet has been the secret behind the success of most global songs like Bécane by French-Cameroonian soul singer and song, Yamê among others. 

Just as social media has been instrumental in the success of these songs, it has always been responsible for the regurgitation of old Nigerian songs. Today, we have Mike Ejeagha benefiting from platforms like TikTok and Reels, which were launched in 2016 and 2020, respectively. These platforms both contributed to the sudden revival of Mike Ejeagha’s Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche (Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo) released in 1983.

Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, a 90-year-old musician, is currently trending on social media after comedian Brain Jotter used his record Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche in a viral video. Gentleman Mike Ejeagha's viral song Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche was used by Brain Jotter in a video posted on his Instagram account on July 5, 2024, and has been viewed 29.1 million times with over 30,000 comments, while TikTok has 19.6 million views and over 23,000 comments. The viral video has sparked a social media trend, with over 7,000 reels and 29,000 TikTok posts featuring the song created in the last week.

Why social media is constantly giving old songs a chance

It's not surprising that old songs from the 1900s to the 2010s are getting a chance to shine in 2024. These songs shaped the childhood and adolescence of the majority of today's youth. Nostalgia is undoubtedly one of the many reasons why modern songs featuring samples from older releases, such as Love Me Jeje by Tems and Sitting on Top of the World by Burna Boy, can shine. First, it creates a marketing narrative, and second, it taps into most young people's residual knowledge and rekindles a sense of gratification, similar to how they felt when the sampled song had its moment. This type of nostalgia in music is a currency and one of the simplest ways for generations to interact.

Speaking with Adeayo Adebiyi, a music editor at Pulse Nigeria, he believes people often find old music creating an emotional connection that will occasionally resurface.  

“So the trend is a result of people going back to rediscover music that shaped our past in a bid to create from it,” he said.

“Lastly, it shows that music from our past will play a big role in shaping the future. If you notice, there’s a growing trend in sampling and interpolations. Tems, AG, Pheelz, Olamide, Chike, and co. are artists who have sampled old music this year,” he added. 

According to Motolani Alake a Label & Marketing Manager at Virgin Music, 

“The long and short of it: The mainstream Pop sound has expired. People need newness.”

“The Afro-pop sound expires every five years and people need new stuff.  That Asake-Piano-fusion, with a tinge and fuji and rap sustained it. Rema's album is polarized because people don't recognise 'new sound' beyond what's known.

“There's a reason why sounds from Ejeagha and Desperate Chicks are making waves on Tiktok. People are yearning for new stuff and because nothing is new, and 'newness' is usually just repurposing the past or an evolution of the past, we're seeing the past get repurposed,” he added. 

Speaking with Sampson Malachy, the co-founder of Maxtreme Inc, the trend is not going to stop. In his words, “The trend will not stop. In fact I see majors going for old catalogs in years to come.”

Tochi Louis, a creative marketing consultant, believes it's purely organic. In his words, “It's not what you sit down and plan. Right now, we don't know the next song that will be picked up. But it's mostly because of the song. It resonated with the people years ago, was heavily consumed then, and thus will most likely be consumed now.”

While Afrobeats and amapiano remain popular music genres in Africa, there has yet to be any successful talent discovered in the African music industry. 

This stagnation has left many fans craving the thrills and glorious new sounds of what the previous year brought forth. Nevertheless, there are several great records in the first half of 2024 that are worth mentioning. Besides offering streaming success, hit tracks, charts, and giant numbers, these albums have given us a captivating experience. Just with those elements of their melody, tracklists, and instruments, those albums have been able to entice the community to keep continuing with African music. 

In this piece, we take a look at ten of the most superb African albums that have been produced so far in 2024. These selections are proof that Africa’s music scene is vast and talented even if some of the biggest names released fewer songs than usual. They include album debuts from emerging artists and comebacks from musicians whose works have been highly anticipated in 2024 in African music.

10. King Promise - True to Self

Currently at the No. 57 position on Nigeria’s TurnTable Charts, with a top position on Ghana’s Apple Music album charts, as well as charting in at least 10 other countries’ Apple Music charts, King Promise’s True To Self is one of the best African albums released in the first half of 2024. The album has a total length of 37 minutes and was released on June 14, 2024, under license from 5K Records Ltd and Sony Music Entertainment UK Ltd. The album includes 12 tracks featuring singles like Perfect Combi with Gabzy, Terminator, Favourite Story featuring Olivetheboy and Sarkodie, and Continental featuring Shallipopi.

King Promise’s journey is radical enough to portray his transformation as an artist and determination towards Afrobeats. With each release, he always goes up a notch and enchants the global audience with his work. True To Self combines highlife, Afrobeats, dancehall, and much more into a perfect blend. It is, therefore, untrue that True To Self is just another body of work from King Promise; songs like Paranoid—a slow-tempo song with Fridayy—and the other singles on the album illustrate why True To Self is one of the best music projects to come out of the African continent in 2024.

9. Vibez INC - VICM Vol 1

I’m sure everyone expected Vibez Incorporation Mixtape Vol. 1 by Vibez Inc., led by Seyi Vibez, to be among the best African albums so far. The album not only introduces Muyeez, with his debut song Instagram featuring Seyi Vibez, but it also marks Billion Solar and Nerryckole’s first offering under the record label. Released on May 10, 2024, and dominating Nigeria’s TurnTable Chart, having spent seven weeks on the chart and peaking at No. 1 as of the time of writing this editorial piece, VICM Vol. 1 is undoubtedly a historic release.

The 10-song project features British rapper Tion Wayne and Nigerian singers Bloody Civilian, Dwillsharmony, and Balloranking. VICM Vol. 1 is a blend of street-pop, afro-adura (a sub-genre of street-pop), Afrobeats, and hip-hop. Its relatable lyrics, amapiano-dominated afro-fusion sound, and groovy melodies are already associated with Seyi Vibez, who clearly A&R-ed this project. Having songs named after social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram adds another unique element that stands out on this project.

8. Ruger x BNXN - R&B

Released on April 17, 2024, featuring singles like Romeo Must Die (RMD) which dropped on February 29, 2024, Ruger and BNXN’s joint extended play R&B is one of the best African albums of 2024 so far. Having spent 10 weeks and counting on TurnTable Charts and charting on Apple Music album charts in about 12 countries, including the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, R&B stands out as one of the notable joint projects by Nigerian singers in recent years. While most joint projects are a result of years of friendship or testament to a harmonious relationship between creatives, such as 2 Kings by Olamide and Phyno released in 2015, Ruger and BNXN’s R&B emerged after more than a year-long beef between the two singers.

Aside from the beef-turned-friendship that birthed the project, standout tracks like Ilashe, POE, and Bae Bae, along with the single RMD, make it enjoyable with their sensual melodies.

The melodies in the project are world-class as expected. BNXN and Ruger are proper vocalists with alluring voices and rare songwriting skills, and they only enhance their sound by working with top-tier producers like Sarz, Blaisebeatz, and Kukbeatz.

7. Young Jonn - Jiggy Forever

With his 16-track debut album Jiggy Forever, featuring artists like Don Jazzy, Zlatan, Ya Levis, Sean Paul, Blaqbonez, Kizz Daniel, and Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn sits at No. 7 on our list of the best African albums released in 2024. The album includes hit singles such as Aquafina, Big Big Things, Sharpally, and Go Hard, showcasing Young Jonn's impressive talent and creativity.

Running for 42 minutes, the album features a Chinese interlude sampled in Pot of God produced by ePianoh, as well as groovy tunes like Bahamas, Bucket List, and Full My Tank featuring Don Jazzy. Peaking at No. 2 on Nigeria’s TurnTable Charts and spending 10 weeks on the Official Top 100 Albums chart, Jiggy Forever is undoubtedly one of the best African albums released this year.

6. Illbliss - Sideh Kai

Sideh Kai by Illbliss is the only hip-hop album on our list of the best African albums released in Nigeria this year. With his hard-hitting punchlines, excellent breath control, groovy instrumentals, and brilliant A&R with spot-on features, Illbliss has delivered one of his best albums to date.

The 16-track album features a variety of genres, including trap music, hip-hop, Afrobeats, highlife, and more. It showcases collaborations with talented artists like Umu Obiligbo, ODUMODUBLVCK, Vector, Ladé, Yukel, FAVE, Cobhams Asuquo, Mádé Kuti, and Deborah Prest.

Like the fifth track on the album, the LP is a masterclass. Beyond the well-thought-out collaborations and meticulously curated tracklist, the punchlines are undoubtedly one of the unique selling points of this album.

5. Tems - Born in the Wild

Born in the Wild is another debut album on this list. Following the release of the GuiltyBeatz-produced Me & U alongside Not An Angel in 2023, Tems dropped Love Me Jeje, an afro-fusion record produced by Spax and GuiltyBeatz that samples Seyi Sodimu’s classic of the same title. The 18-track LP was released on June 6, 2024, peaking at No. 3 on Nigeria’s TurnTable album charts. The album features production credits from Tems, Spax, Sarz, London, GuiltyBeatz, Nsikak David, DameDame, and P2J.

Aside from the singles, songs, like Get It Right featuring Asake, Wickedest, Gangsta, Boy O Boy, Free Fall featuring J. Cole, and Turn Me Up, are standout tracks that justify the inclusion of Born in the Wild as one of the best African albums released in 2024. Each track showcases Tems' unique sound and exceptional talent, making this album a must-listen.

4. Victony - Stubborn

Victony’s debut album Stubborn is far from the regular. The direction is unique. The melodies, lyrics, and instrumentation are not only contemporary, the songs are groovy and futuristic. Victony invites a versatile squad of collaborators into the fold, for some of which it’s their first time getting their feet wet in the Afrobeats scene. Teezo Touchdown, Saint JHN, Asake, Shallipoppi, and Shorae are among Stubborn’s special guests. 

With collaborations on production from KTIZO, P2J, Gaetan Judd, Blaise Beatz, Nineteen85, Western Weiss, 1Mind, Louis Bell, Brendan Grieve, 255, Harri, Fritz, and Cole; the 14-track album came out on June 21, 2024. The album is charting in over 14 countries’ Apple Music album charts.

The journey to the current status was not a smooth ride for Victony but he had to fight many battles. He fought for a shot at life after a devastating crash and took mainstream relevancy by force and making the music that embodies him. Victony found a way to follow his passion for music, and he displays this in an album that is a quintessential expression of his daring innovation.

3. Kizz Daniel - TZA

Kizz Daniel's EP, TZA (short for Thankz Alot), feels like it was given a working title during its creation, a seemingly disposable title that nobody bothered to change.

The EP features recent singles Twe Twe and Too Busy to be Bae, both ultra-popular hits that have been inescapable since the Detty December period. The former, in particular, merges inventiveness with typical Kizz Daniel functionality, pairing folk drums from Nigeria’s north-central region with the singer’s knack for breezy melodies.

Peaking at number one on the TurnTable album chart, this solo 4-song extended play was released on March 11, 2024. All the songs on the EP—Sooner, Showa, Too Busy to be Bae, and Twe Twe—are hit tracks. The EP boasts production credits from Reward Beatz, AyZed, P. Prime, and Killertunes.

2. Tyla - TYLA

Tyla's debut album, Tyla, was released on March 22, 2024, and features guest appearances from Kelvin Momo, Tems, Gunna, Skillibeng, Becky G, and Travis Scott. Sonically, it blends elements of amapiano, pop, afrobeats, and contemporary R&B, with lyrical themes of empowerment and relationships.

The album has made an impressive impact globally, charting in 30 countries on Spotify and 64 countries on Apple Music, including the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. Tyla debuted at number 24 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, peaked at number 26 on the Canadian Albums Chart, and reached number 19 on the UK Albums Chart. It also peaked at number 25 on Nigeria’s Turntable Charts.

Tyla transcends cultural barriers, resonating with listeners globally. It marks a significant triumph for Tyla as an artist and a pivotal moment for African pop music.

1. Ayra Starr - The Year I Turned 21

Before Ayra Starr even turned 21, she had already graduated college, signed with the powerhouse West African label Mavin, and dropped her debut album, 19 & Dangerous. Her second LP, The Year I Turned 21, is the next chapter in her pop stardom storybook. While 19 & Dangerous spotlighted an angsty Ayra jaded by toxic past relationships, TYIT21 captures a Grammy-nominated Starr fixated on getting the bag.

Turning 21 is both a milestone and a trope, but Starr’s portrayal across the record feels refreshingly complicated, filled with contradictions and uncertainties. She sparkles on 21, a heartfelt meditation that wrestles with the weight of self-definition.
