The Nigerian music industry had an eventful 2024, marked by monumental performances, historic wins, groundbreaking collaborations, intense celebrity drama and other moments that shaped the music industry.

From groundbreaking performances at the Grammy Awards to major album releases, the year brought attention to the global influence of Nigerian music and the unique artists that continue to drive its growth.

Here are the top 20 moments that shaped Nigerian music industry in 2024:

1. Burna Boy's historic performance at the Grammy Awards

In February, one of those moments that shaped Nigerian music industry was when Burna Boy made history at the 66th Grammy Awards. He became the first Nigerian artist to perform at the main ceremony. With four nominations, including a prestigious nod for Best Melodic Rap Performance, his performance captivated audiences globally. This electrifying moment reflected Burna Boy's status as a pioneering force in the global music scene. His historic performance not only elevated Nigerian music but also solidified his legacy as one of the country's foremost international musical icons.

2. Nigerian artists' not winning at the Grammy Awards

Despite the high expectations, Nigerian artists such as Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Olamide were unable to secure any wins at the 66th Grammy Awards. With several nominations across various categories, including Davido's Grammy debut with three nominations, the lack of wins served as a reminder of the highly competitive nature of the global music industry. Despite this setback, the strong presence of Nigerian artists at the Grammys showcased their increasing influence on the international stage.

3. Tems' breakthrough moment at Billboard Women In Music awards

Meanwhile, in March, Tems reached another milestone in her career by winning the prestigious Breakthrough award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards. Additionally, Tems graced the cover of Billboard Women in Music Issue, solidifying her place as a rising star.

4. Tiwa Savageā€™s letter to Commissioner of Police over alleged threats from Davido

The Nigerian music industry was rocked by a public dispute between Tiwa Savage and Davido. Following Tiwaā€™s attendance at a party with Sophia Momodu, Davidoā€™s first baby mama, Tiwa alleged receiving threats from Davido over a video featuring herself and Sophia. Nigerian Dancehall sensation Timaya has shared his thoughts on his impressive music collaborations and expressed deep concern over Nigeria's economic challenges.

In a candid interview with Channels TV, Timaya spoke about his music collaborations, hailing BNXN and the late Kefee as the most impressive Nigerian artists he has worked with. He reminisced about his unforgettable experience with Kefee on their hit song Kokoroko, praising her natural talent and angelic voice.

Also, regarding BNXN, Timaya recounted how their 2021 hit Cold Outside was born from a casual conversation. BNXN quickly reproduced the idea in the studio, showcasing his exceptional talent.

Meanwhile, Timaya voiced his worries about Nigeria's economic struggles, emphasizing that Nigerians are unhappy with the current state of affairs. As someone who pays bills and supports others, he understands the difficulties people face.

"The cost of living has substantially increased, affecting everyone," Timaya said. "Even politicians are cryingā€¦ If you're earning in dollars and spending in dollars, that's the only way to cope."

However, comparing Nigeria's economic situation to other countries, Timaya noted that while the global economy is challenging, Nigeria's situation is particularly dire.

Furthermore, the economic instability has significantly affected the music industry, Timaya explained. "You need millions to promote musicā€¦ Booking fees for artists are expensive now."

Lastly, Timaya's comments highlight the harsh realities of Nigeria's economic climate and its far-reaching consequences.

Fola & BNXN - Alone Remix Lyrics

Hit me up when you feel alone
When I see her for the village o, I fall
With the way she dey bere jo (oh-oh, mo je ri)
Chilalo o, chilalo
Them dey feel the rhythm for my piano, oh-ah
This music na my iyawo
Iyawo, oh-oh

Seeing is believing
But still them feeling me, lo ri titi
I know you missing me
Eh sha ma miliki
Baby, shoti tiri nisiyin, kini mi
When you on your bikini, oga
Girl, Iā€™m losing, you cheating me
Oh joor, pity me
Walahi

Iā€™ve had enough
Onitemi joor, Iā€™m tearing up
I know I fell in love with the right one
You know my kind of love no be slight one
Omode o shey mi mo
See as your body plum with your stature
Ki eledua ko mi yo from your actions
Your I donā€™t care attitude, nice one

Seeing is believing
But still them feeling me, lo ri titi
I know you missing me
Eh sha ma miliki
Baby, o tiri nisiyin, kini mi
When you on your bikini, oga
Girl, Iā€™m losing, you cheating me
Oh joor, pity me
Walahi

Kilode to fe ma buga sā€™emi
Kana eleyi go trabaye you o
Brother mo ma sunā€™ta leni
'Cause oh baby get where she dey carry me go
Ko le le monsunmola, Jesu
The things wey you dey do, painful hm
Iā€™m unstable, you say you no love me?
How will you say so?
Oh-oh Iā€™ve been on my, own o
Yes Iā€™ve been alone, solo
Looking for your love
Iā€™ve been looking all alone

The feeling is deceiving
But I hope your listening
Lori ti ti, I heard theyā€™re missing me
Ko sha ma miliki
As you no dey respond
Girl, itā€™s killing me
When you post on your IG
Oh God
Girl Iā€™m
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
